WATERBURY
HOSPITAL HIV/AIDS PROGRAM WINS FIRST PLACE IN NATIONAL
POSTER CONTEST
WATERBURY
– Waterbury Hospital’s Infectious Disease Clinic
finished first in two categories of a national poster
contest that took place at the 2010 Ryan White
All-Grantees Conference in Washington DC in late August.
The program’s poster entries, which were designed to
call attention to key areas of HIV/AIDS treatment, were
judged to be the best among 160 entries from across the
country.
The
poster contest was part of the biannual Ryan White
All-Grantees Conference in which HIV providers from
across the country gather in the nation’s capital to
share information and methodologies in the effort to
prevent and treat HIV infection and AIDS.
This year’s conference marked the first time that a
poster contest was held as a way to call attention to
specific areas of HIV/AIDS treatment and management. The
Infectious Disease Clinic submitted poster entries in
two of seven categories of the contest, and took first
place in both.
One
of the winning entries, “Photography as a Tool for
Developing Positive Life Skills,” took first prize in
the category of Access and Retention, while the other
entry, “Successful Integration of Hepatitis C Treatment
Into a Primary HIV Clinic,” took first prize in the
category of Prevention Care/Continuum. The entries were
prepared and submitted by Leonard Savage, an Infectious
Disease Clinic Peer Advocate, and several Waterbury
Hospital employees, including Linda Sapio-Longo, APRN;
Richard Smith, MSW; Nicole DeVito, Administrative
Assistant; and Steven Aronin, MD, Program Director for
Ryan White Programs at the clinic.
In
addition to submitting the winning poster entries, the
Infectious Disease Clinic was also chosen to make two
workshop presentations during the conference. These
workshops showcased the clinic’s successful integration
of peer-led programs and buprenorphine treatment into a
primary HIV care clinic, and will hopefully be adopted
by other programs across the country. The highlight of
the conference came during a ceremony when clinic
representatives were given the poster awards by Deborah
Parham Hopson, PhD, RN, who is the Associate
Administrator for the HIV/AIDS Bureau of the U.S. Health
and Human Services Administration.
“We
are very proud to have been recognized in this fashion,”
Dr. Aronin said.
